The Eastern Regional Police Office, Biratnagar, on Wednesday formed a three-member probe committee to investigate the Saptari incident.
Four persons died and over a dozen were injured on Monday when police opened fire to stop the agitating Samyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha cadres from disrupting the CPN-UML’s Mechi-Mahakali campaign that kicked off from Kakarbhitta of Jhapa on Saturday.
The committee was formed under the headship of SSP Uttam Karki, informed DIG Ramesh Bhattarai of the Eastern Regional Police Office, Biratnagar.
SP Bhim Prasad Dhakal and SP Bidya Nanda Majhi are in the committee.
Meanwhile, officials of the local administration, Rajbiraj, and leaders of the Madhesi Morcha held a meeting today to minimise the problems surfaced after the Saptari incident.
Following the incident, the government had recalled the Chief District Officer of Saptari and district chiefs of the Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force on Tuesday.
During the meeting, the Morcha leaders demanded martyr status to the deceased, compensation to their family members and free treatment to those who were injured in the incident.
The leaders also said that the bodies would be handed over to their respective family members after holding a discussion with the new Chief District Officer.
