Family murdered by close relatives

- ABDHESH KUMAR JHA, RAJBIRAJ

A family in Saptari was murdered by their close relatives to grab their property.
Police said Surya Narayan Sah, his pregnant wife Bechani Devi and their two-year-old daughter Pratibha of Rajbiraj Municipality-15 were murdered in June.

The incident was revealed after months long investigation that led the arrest of five suspects. SP Mukesh Kumar Singh of District Police Office, Saptari, said Surya Narayan’s younger brother Panchadev Sah, his maternal uncle Chalitar Sah and other close family relatives had planned and executed the three murders.

Police have so far arrested five suspects— Panchadev Sah, his wife Pramila Devi, brother-in-law Jibachha Sah and two other relatives, Dharmendra Sah and Satya Narayan Sah, while Chalitar Sah and four others are on the run.

SP Singh said police were also searching for the bodies of Surya Narayan and his daughter Pratibha. The bodies of father and daughter, according to the suspects, were buried near West Koshi canal. But police are yet to find their bodies, as the location described by the suspects had been washed away by recent
floodings.

Bechani Devi’s body was discovered in a septic tank of her house days after she was murdered on June 14. She was five months pregnant.

During the initial days of the investigation, police had suspected that Surya Narayan might have murdered his pregnant wife and fled to India with their two-year-daughter.

SP Singh said their suspicion got directed towards Panchadev and other family members after the parents of Bechani Devi told police that their son-in-law, Surya Narayan, could never have murdered their daughter with whom he was expecting their second child.

Soon, police arrested Panchadev for questioning, and he admitted to the murder of his brother and his family by teaming up with other relatives. Police also discovered that Surya Narayan had been sold into servitude in India by his maternal uncle Chalitar Sah when he was just a boy, and he had returned home only a few years ago and claimed inheritance rights, much to the anger of Panchadev and other family members.

The case had reached the court where Surya Narayan was granted a share of the family property after the DNA test confirmed his legitimacy. The court had also sentenced Chalitar Sah to one year in prison on human trafficking conviction.

SP Singh said Panchadev, Chalitar Sah and the others were after reclaiming the properties won through litigation by Surya Narayan.
