A month of devotion and faith

Sheikh Akhtar has been waking up to his alarm at 2 am every day for the past 10 days. It is the month of Ramadan. Akhtar has to get up early so that he has enough time to fill his body with nutritious food while it is still dark. For as soon as the sun is up, he has to start his fast. He fears that if he does not wake up on time, he will have to spend the day on an empty stomach.

Stitch together, stick together

The two brothers work from 8 am to 6 pm everyday. Every morning, they collect their equipment—Bharat from a tyre workshop and Ram from a barber shop nearby. Bharat and Ram make about Rs 25,000 and Rs 20,000 per month, respectively.

Shelter from the storm

Since most homes were made out of mud and stone, the storm easily blew away roofs made of thatch or corrugated iron, leaving residents to spend the night under a naked sky, with only the stars for company. By morning, relief had arrived, and temporary tents distributed.
