Tainted Inspector to get police boot

- Ekantipur Report, KATHMANDU

Jul 5, 2011-

The Ministry of Home Affairs is all set to dismiss controversial Police Inspector Rup Kumar Neupane from police service for hobnobbing with criminals in the Tarai.

Neupane was earlier demoted to Inspector from DSP, a severe yet rare punishment in police service, last year for protecting armed groups, including those behind the murder of Janakpur-based media entrepreneur Arun Singhaniya, the chairman of Janakpur Today Publications.

Since his demotion Neupane is said to have never remained in touch with the police organisation. According to a highly-placed source at the ministry, preparations are underway to dismiss him from police service given his non-cooperation with the police's chain of command. The action against Neupane, however, will not bar him from joining government services in future, he added.

A few months before his demotion, the ministry had suspended Neupane for four months in accordance with the recommendation of the Police Headquarters.

His demotion followed a probe committee's report that convicted him of protecting a controversial person named Sanjeev Jha, who had a strong nexus with armed groups in Tarai. Neupane was in Dhanusha that time.
