Nepali poet bags Saarc award

Poet Suman Pokhrel was honored with the Saarc literary award along with five distinguished literary figures of the region amid a function organised in Agra, India, on Sunday.

Pokharel, also a lyricist and translator, has acclaimed collections of poems called Soonya Mutuko Dhadkanbhitra (1999) and Jeevanko Chheubaata (2010).  The award was handed over by Suresh K Goel, director general of the Indian Council of Cultural Relations at the inaugural session of 13th Saarc Festival of Literature at the Grand Hotel in Agra.

Script writer and poet Farheen Chaudhary of Pakistan, Abdul Khaliq Rashid of Afghanistan and novelist Daya Dissanayake of Sri Lanka and poet diplomat Abhay K of India were also honoured with the award.

Abhay K is the spokesman of the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu. The award is distributed annually to eminent writers from the South Asian region.
