Three Star Club beat Manang Marshyangdi Club (MMC) 3-1 to end their domestic arch-rivals’ 16-game winning streak and lift the 34th Governor’s Gold Cup for the second time here on Friday.
In a clash between the two Nepali top-tier teams captain Santosh Sahukhala and Ashim Jung Karki scored in the first half while Jagjeet Shrestha netted the third late in the second period to seal comfortable Three Star victory. Sulabh Maskey pulled one back for MMC.
Three Star took the lead against the run of play when Sahukhala headed in a Sandip Rai freekick into the net in the 26th minute. The 2008 champions again scored from a set piece when Jagjeet’s freekick found an unmarked Karki allowing him to head home three minutes later.
Man-of-the-match Jagjeet sealed the victory tapping in a ball in Karki’s corner kick nine minutes from time. Second half substitute Sulav Maskey netted a consolation goal guiding in an acute cross from Rai in the 87th minute.
Three Star coach Anjan KC said that it was a deserved victory. “It feels great to have avenged our Safal Cup defeat. The trophy also meant a lot for me as it is the first for me as a coach,” added KC. “We will now prepare for the upcoming Ncell Cup,” he said.
MMC coach Hemanta Ale expressed great disappointment and blamed fatigue as the main reason for their defeat. “Our players were clearly tired after their
semi-final efforts,” he said. Ale also said that four of their defenders were not fully fit for the match which also contributed to his team’s below par performance.
