In a press statement on Sunday, Regmi's personal secretariat has refuted the claims made by Chairman of Nepal Medical Association Dr. Anjani Kumar Jha about government's involvement in the controversial appointed of Dean at IoM.
Regmi's press advisor Bimal Gautam, in the press statement, said that Regmi has been actively working to resolve the problem at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital.
"It is unfortunate that such malicious remarks were made against the chairman while he had held several rounds of discussions prior to the appointment and directed the concerned authority to not go ahead with it, ," the statement said. The statement claimed that Regmi has been holding serious discussions with the Health Minister, TU Vice Chancellor, secretary and concerned officials at TUTH for the past few days.
The Tribhuvan University (TU) executive council appointed Dr Sashi Sharma as the new Dean of IoM. His precursor, Dr Prakash Sayami had resigned amid a bitter dispute over granting affiliation to new medical colleges. Dr. Sharma is a controversial figure whose involvement in corruption during his tenure in the Nepal Medical Council is being investigated by the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA).
Dr Govinda KC, senior orthopaedician at the TUTH, has been on an indefinite strike demanding the government reinstate former dean Dr Sayami, stop giving affiliation to new medical colleges, end political interference in the IoM, take action against Tribhuvan University office bearers, and develop IoM into an independent university.
Nepal Medical Association shut down all the hospitals across the country from Sunday, calling for immediate resignation of Dr Sharma and an end to political interference at the IoM.
