40 doctors rounded up from Capital
Around 40 doctors were arrested after police intervened in their peaceful rally organised to express solidarity with agitating Dr Govinda KC in the Capital on Monday.Ekantipur Report
Some 300 doctors had gathered at Maitighar and taken out a rally in support of Dr. Govinda KC, who has been staging indefinite hunger strike demanding removal of newly appointed dean at the Institute of Medicine (IoM) among other some crucial reforms in the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH). The doctors were detained while they tried to march towards Singha Durbar, the central government secretariat. Secretary of Nepal Medical Association Bikash Poudel is among the arrestee.
Dr KC, senior orthopaedician at the TUTH, has been on an indefinite strike demanding the government reinstate former dean Dr Prakash Sayami, stop giving affiliation to new medical colleges, end political interference in the IoM, take action against Tribhuvan University office bearers, and develop IoM into an independent university.
Hospitals remained shut across the country after Nepal Medical Association called for the closure demanding immediate resignation of Dr Sharma and an end to political interference at the IoM.
