8 tonne betel nuts seized
Police on Tuesday night detained 20 Indian porters and seized around 8 tonnes of betel nuts being smuggled into India from Bhadrapur of Jhapa.Superintendent of Police Mukunda Acharya said they also confiscated readymade garment worth Rs 500,000 being imported illegally from India.
SP Acharya said around 150 porters were crossing the border carrying the betel nuts when they made the arrest. After the police intervened, there was a scuffle between the police and the porters and the police had to blank-fire to take the situation under control. The arrestees include eight women and four kids. The attested have been handed over to Mechi Customs Office, Kakarbhitta, for further action.
Local traders condemned the police action and a raid carried out at the resident of Debu Pakuwal of Bhadrapur 2. They shut down the market for the whole day, stating the police raided Pakuwal’s house in an unruly manner.
Jhapa Chamber of Commerce and Industry also condemned the police’s move issuing a press release.
