UML gen secy rules out consensus govt
CPN-UML General Secretary Shanker Pokhrel has claimed that a majority government will be formed, ruling out the possibility of forming a consensus government.Ekantipur Report
"Forming a consensus government is impossible," he said, "Now there is no need to urge the President for more time in the name of consensus."
Alleging that the President's hurried call to form a government was in breach of the rules, Pokhrel claimed that the call to form the government without finalising the ordinances tabled at the legislature-parliament and electing the CA chairman and vice-chairman has altered the process.
He claimed the task of drafting the new constitution will be easier only if the parties have a respectful power-sharing agreement while allocating the posts of President, Vice President, House Speaker, Deputy Speaker and government leadership. He opined that a government should be formed under the leadership of Nepali Congress including UML and UCPN (Maoist).
"It would not be appropriate for the UCPN (Maoist), who call itself a major stakeholder of the peace process, to stay in opposition," said the UML leader.
Responding to the remarks of Pokhrel, at the programme, UCPN (Maoist) spokesperson Agni Sapkota made it clear his party is ready to join the government if it helps in finding the solution of the problem in the time of crisis his, but for now UCPN (Maoist) is in favor of staying in the opposition bench.
"We have not completely shut the door to consensus. But we are ready to join the government in case any problem arrives in constitution drafting," said the UCPN (Maoist) leader.
Likewise, Nepali Congress leader Deep Kumar Upadhayay remarked that a majority government will be formed if a national consensus cannot be forged.
Saying that the NC is morally obliged to take the ownership of the agreements forged by the first CA, leader Upadhayay expressed his party's commitment to move forward by embracing the past agreements.
He claimed that his party president has been striving to take the responsibility of drafting the new constitution by putting his politics of dedication, values and morality at stake. He called on the parties to lend support in creating a conducive environment to draft the new constitution within a year by giving up their greed learning from the past mistakes.
