Dr KC resumes hunger strike
Dr Govinda KC , senior orthopedic surgeon at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH ), has resumed hunger strike on Saturday following government's inability to address his demands.Ekantipur Report
This is Dr KC's fourth hunger strike concerning the appointment of dean at IoM.
A three-member committee was earlier formed by the University to recommend names of prospective deans. The committee, however, failed to accomplish its task, despite negotiations on Friday.
Dr KC's decision to resume hunger strike comes moments after Dr Deepak Mahara, member of a three-member committee formed to recommend names of prospective deans at IoM, resigned from the committee earlier in the day.
The committee includes Prof Dr Krishna Kumar Oli, Dr Ratendra Shrestha and Dr Deepak Mahara.
The committee members were sharply divided over the basis on which the dean should be appointed. While Mahara advocated an appointment based on seniority, Shrestha argued that this should not be the sole criteria.
Dr KC had ended his 14-day hunger strike on January 24 after a four-member government taskforce headed by Secretary at Prime Minister’s Office Krishna Hari Baskota assured him that his demands would be addressed at the earliest. The government team had agreed to open a feasibility study on providing autonomy to the IoM, stop affiliation to new medical colleges and set up a mechanism to appoint a new dean on the basis of seniority and work experience as demanded by Dr KC.
