Don't alienate UML: NC lawmakers
Twenty five NC district presidents and lawmakers on Thursday urged PM and party President Sushil Koirala not to further alienate likely coalition partner CPN-UML on power-sharing issues.
The NC lawmakers held a meeting with Koirala at his residence on Thursday and submitted a written report addressing the current dispute on ministerial berths as well as avenues by which the party could be strengthened.
Though urging Koirala not to distance the party from the UML, the lawmakers also advised Koirala not to cede control over the Home Ministry.
"The success and failure of any PM lies in good governance and maintaining law and order, making the Home Ministry directly related to the PM's prestige. So we urged him to set a precedent in which home, defence and finance ministries are possessed by the PM," said Kamal Pangeni, an NC lawmaker and district party president of Syangja.
In talks with Koirala, Pangeni further emphasised the need to develop a coalition culture due to Nepal's mixed-model electoral system and its tendency to deliver coalition governments.
The 25 lawmakers also advised Koirala to give top priority to the constitution-drafting process and ensuring good governance. "People have been questioning the credibility of the ruling parties over the delay in government formation. We asked him to settle the row as soon as possible," said Pangeni. Likewise, the district leaders demanded the holding of a jamboree of district party presidents in Biratnagar, Morang, for charting a future course for the party and government.
After listening to the lawmakers, Koirala said that he was serious about resolving the issue of the allocation of the Home Ministry, but that there were some misunderstandings with the UML." We have not committed to allocating it to the UML nor have we given any other indications during the talks," said Pangeni, quoting Koirala. District presidents from Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Nuwakot, Morang, Tanauh, Kaski, Baglung, Kapilbastu, Rupandehi, Bardiya, Dhankuta, Siraha, Sindhupalchowk, Kanchanpur, Doti, Baitiadi among others were present during the meeting with PM Koirala.
