Student unions meet PM Koirala
Sixteen different student unions agitating against the recent hike in prices of petroleum called on PM Sushil Koirala on Sunday and urged him to roll back the decision to hike prices.Ekantipur Report
The agitating students met the prime minister at his official residence in Baluwatar and submitted a memorandum calling for revoking the recent hike in fuel prices. The students have also demanded for ending irregularities in the state-owned oil supplier Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC).
Prime Minister Sushil Koirala has issued directives to the ministry concerned to hold talks regarding the demands of the various student organisations protesting the hike in the prices of petroleum products and resolve the problem.
In response, PM Koirala directed the secretary at the Ministry of Commerce and Supplies and other concerned officials to immediately hold talks with the student organisations. He hinted that the government was ready to review the prices of petroleum products.
According to Maoist aligned student union All Nepal National Independent Student Union (ANNISU-R), PM Koirala said the students should refrain from organising programmes of shutdowns and general strikes as the government was ready to address the problem through talks and dialogue.
Deputy Prime Minister Bamdev Gautam, Finance Minister Ram Sharan Mahat and commerce secretary, among other officials, were present during the meeting.
