In PP meet, Koirala takes a lot of flak
Prime Minister Sushil Koirala on Sunday faced the wrath of his own party lawmakers over his working style at the first meeting of the Parliamentary PartyAnil Giri
Almost a dozen NC parliamentarians who spoke on the occasion criticised him on a range of issues including Cabinet expansion, the hike in fuel prices and te government's Common Minimum Programme that was unveiled at a press conference. Lawmakers from the Koirala camp also criticised the PM's acts.
Only Ram Krishna Yadav supported the government. While many Koirala loyalists were critical of his activities, Arjun Joshi and Dipak Giri reminded the PM of his role at a time when the country is heading through a difficult transition. They urged Koirala to pay attention to the party and listen to party cadres.
At the outset of the meeting, Koirala admitted that several mistakes had cropped up while taking some crucial decisions. He vowed not to repeat them. "In future, I will consult the party before taking any decision," he said.
Gopal Man Shrestha accused Koirala of being autocratic. He charged that no criteria was followed while selecting ministers, fuel prices were jacked up while the government should be providing relief to the people and the government's agenda was not discussed in the party.
Another lawmaker, Arjun Narsingh KC lashed Koirala that he had flouted systems and principles that he had long advocated. Prakash Sharan Mahat advised him not to indulge in "cosmetic ideas such as returning his remuneration to the state".
Koirala had returned the travel allowance that he received during his trip to Myanmar for attending the summit of the Bay of Bengal Initiatives for Multi-sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation.
