Relief eludes Koshi victims
A majority of the families displaced by the Koshi river flood more than five years ago have not received government compensation.Bedraj Poudel
The government had divided the victims into three categories and announced to offer relief accordingly. Besides cash compensation, the government had also pledged the victims ration and wood to rebuild their homes. Only a few hundred families have received the relief so far, and that too in partial amounts and quantities.
The families that were most affected by the flood received only Rs 14,000 and ration for three months, though the government had announced to offer Rs 29,000 and ration for six months.
Mohamed Wajuddwin Miya, who leads the flood victims committee, said out of 1,422 families who lost their land in the flooding, only 700 have been provided with land. Similarly, only 1,528 of the 3,370 families have received wood to rebuild their homes.
Many families who depended on agriculture have been hit hard as the flood silted up their farmlands. Although the government had assured to remove the sand deposits and make the land arable, it has not taken any initiative so far.
Nazam Ansari of Kuswaha-3 claimed a large amount of money meant for compensation was misappropriated. Another flood victim Badri Prasad Sah said while the flood victims of Bihar have already received compensation and relief materials, there are thousands of us here in Nepal still waiting for the government to compensate us for our loss.
The government has even failed to rebuild the infrastructure either damaged or destroyed in the flooding. Mohamed Daud Mansuri said out of 16 roads destroyed in the flood, only five have been reconstructed. He said that visiting the neighbouring villages has become difficult.
Acting Chief District Officer of Sunsari Chandeshwor Pokharel said the office has sent a letter to the concerned ministry requesting for compensation money and other relief materials.
