Ethnicity-based federalism not possible: PM Koirala
Prime Minister Sushil Koirala has said that ethnicity cannot become the basis for federalism in the country.Stating that ultra-ethnic ideology has pushed many countries into crisis around the globe, Prime Minister Koirala said he was against federating the country on the basis of ethnicity.
Addressing the 11th convocation ceremony of Pokhara University here on Friday, PM Koirala, who is also the Chancellor of the University, said he was striving to promulgate the new constitution within a year in order to institutionalise republic along with federalism.
He was also of the view that sustainable peace and political stability could bring radical changes in the development of the country within eight to ten years.
Noting that the government was ready to bring policy level reforms along with infrastructure development of improving the quality of education in the university, PM Koirala expressed his confidence that the university would help make Pokhara an international education centre through quality education.
On the occasion, Chancellor Koirala presented the gold medal to Abinash Bastola, who topped in the bachelor level under the Institute of Science and Technology, and to Anita Ranabhat for topping the master's level in the management section.
Likewise, Nitya Pandey who topped in the humanities group bagged the Chancellor medal and Abinash Bastola and Pratiksya Joshi of the management section received the Vice-chancellor medal.
A total of 3,300 students graduated from different levels of education under the University.
Minister for Education Chitralekha Yadav, culture expert Satya Mohan Joshi and Vice-chancellor of the University Khagendra Prasad Bhattarai appealed to the students to utilise their skills and knowledge in the betterment of the society and the nation as a whole.
