The Chinese leader made such remark during a meeting with visiting CPN-UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal at his residence in Beijing on Friday morning.

During the hour-long meeting, Li said China is willing to substantially increase its financial assistance, including direct investment in the country, to Nepal once there is peace and stability.

Khanal told the Post that Li advised Nepal to strengthen its relation with India. “China does not interfere in the internal affairs of other countries. However, China will not remain silent if it deems Nepal’s sovereignty is at risk,” Khanal said quoting the Chinese leader.

During the meeting, Li said China is ready to provide any kind of assistance to Nepal if the latter comes up with concrete plan to achieve its development goals. He also expressed hope that the Nepali political leaders would drive the country towards the path of development after delivering the much-awaited new constitution on time.

Khanal said he requested the Chinese vice-president to initiate the task of extending the Lhasa-Shigatse railway upto Kathmandu and help Nepal construct the international airport in Bara. Khanal also assured Li that Nepal is committed to its long-held ‘One China policy’. During his visit, Khanal also met Wang Jiarui, Vice minister for the International Department of the Chinese Communist Party’s Central Committee.

During the meeting, Wang told Khanal that China is interested in long-term projects such as hydropower, railways and expanding roads and air links in Nepal.

Khanal, who left for China on May 6, is returning via Guangzhao on Friday night.
