Releasing the 'national integrity system assessment: country report 2014' here in the Capital on Wednesday, the Transparency International-Nepal has said major challenge in Nepal was to keep civil service detached from politics.

Transparency International's Regional Director for Asia Pacific, Srirak Plipat, while releasing the report, said the report was prepared by conducting survey and research. He said the corruption is increasing much in the south Asian countries and the political parties are in the forefront to abet it.

To curb the corruption, the report has stressed for strengthening capacity of watchdog bodies, protecting key institutions from undue political influence and monitoring the implementation of the vital laws.

The global corruption barometer said that 90 percent Nepalis believe that political parties are corrupt or extremely corrupt while 85 percent consider public officials and public servants to be corrupt or extremely corrupt and 72 percent believe that corruption in the country has increased in the last two years.

As per the survey conducted in 177 countries of the world, Nepal stands at 116th position in the global corruption list. The country with extreme corruption is Somalia while Denmark and New Zealand are the countries with least corruption.

On the occasion, Chairman of the Transparency International-Nepal, Bishnu Bahadur KC, said the corruption would decline once political interference in public sector was discouraged.
