The Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee on Friday initiated the hearing of nominees recommended for the post of Supreme Court justice.Ekantipur Report
The House committee today grilled Baidya Nath Upadhyay, one the eight judges nominated for the SC by the Judicial Council (JC). The committee decided to grill the nominees for the apex court after the recommended names courted controversy due to the inclusion of some justices with tainted reputation.
During the parliamentary hearings, Upadhyay reportedly admitted the anomalies in the judiciary just like in the other sectors of society and stressed on the need to eradicate them with collective effort.
The committee halted the hearing after questioning Upadhyay due to lack of time as the Constituent Assembly (CA) meeting was slated for 3 in the afternoon. Upadhyay is the youngest brother of former chief justices Bishwonath Upadhyay and Kedarnath Upadhyay.
On April 23, the Judicial Council (JC) had recommended eight names: Baidya Nath Upadhyay, Gopal Parajuli, Deepak Raj Joshi, Govinda Upadhyay, Om Prakash Mishra, Devendra Gopal Shrestha, Cholendra Shumsher Rana and Jagdish Poudel.
