Addressing a programme in the Capital on Wednesday, Yadav said freedom of expression and safety of journalists were must for institutionalising democracy. Mahendra Bista, president of the Federation of Nepali Journalists, dismissed the proposed bill on contempt of court as an attempt to restrain the media.
“Journalists are unsafe not only physically but professionally. Hence, their safety should be of prime concern to the government,” said Borna Bahadur Karki, chairperson of Press Council Nepal.
The FNJ reports that 35 media workers have been killed and four disappeared since 2001. In 2013 alone, the federation recorded 269 cases of media rights violations including one murder of a journalist and one forced disappearance.
Karki stressed the need for legislation to safeguard press freedom.
