Bir Hospital docs continue indefinite strike
The resident doctors at the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) Bir Hospital continued their indefinite strike on the third day, warning of more stern protests. The doctors have bee launching an indefinite strike since Sunday demanding reforms at the country’s oldest health facility.
Around 300 resident doctors, including orthopaedics, radiologists and surgeons, resorted to the move claiming that the government failed to provide basic equipment such as MRI, CT-scan and X-ray machines at the hospital.
"We will continue our agitation until our demands are heard," said Resident Doctors Association of Nepal (RAN) President Dr Mangal Rawal, adding that they had not halted the medical services for patients.
"There are more than 250 doctors employed here, and numerous nurses and employees. We had informed acting chair of NAMS Dr. Mukunda Panthi on Friday that RAN is shutting down its services from Sunday," Rawal said.
He also said that NAMS was requested to inform all the doctors and staffs of the possible crisis, citing RAN's legitimate agitation. RAN stressed the need for doctors and staffs to work harder so as to not create any obstruction in services provided to the patients during residential doctors' absence from service. "If the medical service in Bir Hospital is to stop owing to RAN's decision to shut itself down, then there is no need for others to work here."
Dr. Rawal said that most of the patients attending medical services at Bir Hospital were poor. "Since we were unable to provide standard medical services due to lack of essential equipments, this agitation is a voice raised for the poor Nepali people," he said.
