Baidya union threatens Kantipur newspapers
A 72-hour ultimatum served by Subidhanagar Unit of All Nepal Revolutionary Press and Publication Union to Kantipur Publications Pvt Ltd has drawn serious attention from Nepal Media Society.In a statement on Thursday, the Society condemned attempts to obstruct newspaper’s publication and distribution on any pretext, adding that any act that infringes on the people’s right to information was deplorable.
The union, affiliated to the Mohan Baidya-led CPN (Maoist), warned on Monday of disrupting the publication and distribution of newspapers from Friday if its demands were not met by, Thursday, August 14.
“The efforts to pose obstacles to media houses, which have the crucial responsibility of disseminating news and keeping the public informed during the important phase of constitution-drafting process is totally inappropriate,” the Society stated.
It urged all the parties to take back the strike plan and create an environment that facilitates the publication and dissemination of the newspapers. If the public and readers are denied the right to information following obstruction in publication and distribution of the papers, the group enforcing banda, strike and those providing political protection will be responsible for the inconvenience, the statement warned.
