Agitating Nepali workers to resume work on Friday
The agitating Nepali workers in Malaysia have agreed to return to work on Friday after their company agreed to address their demands, the Nepali Embassy in Kuala Lumpur said. The workers had gone on strike putting forth a number of demands including permits for overtime work and sick leave as per the agreement and better working conditions and living quarters.
Hem Lal Bhattarai, an official at the embassy, said that a meeting between JCY International, the Malaysian firm, and the workers on Wednesday concluded after reaching an agreement to address the demands of workers. The agreement has ensured resumption of work at the company located in Johor state in Malaysia from Friday.
The firm that makes parts of electronic giants including Samsung, Hitachi and Western Digital, had remained shut for the past three days due to the protest.
The workers had also accused the company of negligence after a Nepali employee, Harka Bahadur Niraula died last Thursday complaining of chest pains. “The company has agreed to address the worker’s demands. All workers will return to work on Friday,” Bhattarai said.
At least 44 Nepali workers had been arrested in Malaysia on Wednesday after a massive riot sparked fires and destroyed parts of an electronics factory, highlighting accusations of poor conditions for many of the estimated our million foreign workers in the country.
