Congo returnee NA man under observation for Ebola
Ebola Virus Screening Health Desk at Birgunj-based Nepal-India border has kept a Nepali, who recently returned from Congo, under observation for widely spreading Ebola Virus.Ekantipur Report
The returnee is a Nepal Army (NA) soldier who returned from Congo on August 24 after completing six-month tenure at UN Peace Keeping Mission. According to Seraj Khan, Health Assistant at the screening desk, the NA solider was kept under high observation as his symptoms were similar to Ebola patients.
A permanent resident of Simara in Bara, the NA soldier’s identity has not been revealed.
According to World Health Organisation, the outbreak of EVD in West Africa has gone unchecked with a total of 2,127 cases and 1,145 deaths (as of August 13). Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Nigeria are the most affected countries.
The world’s worst Ebola outbreak has killed 932 people in West Africa after the first case was reported in March in Guinea. Humans contract the disease from infected animals, including chimpanzees and fruit bats.
According to WHO, EVD is a severe acute viral illness often characterised by a sudden onset of fever, intense weakness, muscle pain, headache and sore throat. This is followed by vomiting, diarrhoea, rash, impaired kidney and liver function, and in some cases, both internal and external bleeding. People are infectious as long as their blood and secretions contain the virus. The WHO says there is no licensed vaccine for EVD with several formalue being tested, but none are available for clinical use.
