Manandhar bags triple gold
Debesh Manandhar of SVI ruled the roost on the first day of the third NSA Cup Open and Age-group Swimming Championships at the Satdobato Swimming Complex on Sunday.Manandhar clinched gold medals in open and two in age group categories. In the open category, Manandhar won the men’s 1,500m freestyle in 21:55.88. He added more titles in the 100m backstroke (1:18.62) and freestyle (1:05.32) in the U-17 age-group category. Rupesh Chaudhary of Tribhuvan Army Club (TAC) struck the men’s 200m backstroke (2;57.53) gold followed by Shuvam Shrestha of KMC and Kiran Karki of TAC. Basudev Tharu handed TAC yet another gold in 100m butterfly, swimming the distance in 1:17.46. Jayant Prakash Gurung of Marigold and Janak Rai of TAC came home second and third respectively.
In the two-day championships organised by Nepal Swimming Association (NSA), Shila Gurung of Xavier Academy claimed gold in women’s 100m butterfly in 1:32.95. Nasir Husain clinched the men’s gold in 50m butterfly (39.98) while Anushka Pokhrel of Rato Bangala won the girls’ category in 53.12.
Tenzing Lama of British School sealed the U-12 girls’ 50m backstroke (42.37) title. Galen Kelley of Lincoln won the U-14 boys’ 100m backstroke (1:22.16) and 100m freestyle (1:24.45) while his schoolmate Shritika Singh won the U-17 girls’100m butterfly (1:35.09). Lincoln won 4x100m freestyle relay for U-17 girls’ category.
In the open category, Sonira Bista of TAC struck gold in women’s 100m backstroke with the timings of 31.32. Aditi Dhital of Lincoln School and Eva Kafle of Little Angels School finished second and third respectively in the event. Dilip Thapa added fourth gold medal for TAC after winning the men’s 50m butterfly (35.63) gold. Oshina Bharati got hold of the women’s 50m butterfly (36.31) gold. Likewise, Sirish Gurung handed Nepal Police Club the first gold after completing the men’s 50m freestyle in 26.16.
