CK Raut remanded in custody for 24 hrs
The Special Court on Thursday sent CK Raut to judicial custody for 24 hours for further investigation.A division bench of Judges Mohan Raman Bhattarai and Bhupendra Rai issued the order to that effect. Raut, who is accused of being involved in a secessionist campaign, was brought to Kathmandu from Morang and subsequently produced before the court.
Police demand to take the accused into the custody for 25 days before filing the case. However, the court remanded him into custody for only 24 hours, Special Court Registrar Natibanu Lamichhane said.
Government attorneys Tek Bahadur Ghimire and Dhanishwor Poudel had demanded that Raut be remanded in custody for 25 days, while Raut's lawyers demanded his release citing political rights and freedom of speech guaranteed by the constitution.
On Saturday, Morang police arrested Raut. Later, the District Administration Office (DAO) booked him under the Public Offence Act. The DAO had remanded him into custody for six days for investigation.
Responding to a habeas corpus filed by Surya Kanta Raut, brother of the accused, the Supreme Court had issued an order saying that Raut be produced before the court by Friday. He was brought to the Capital following the order.
