Involve communities in climate resilient development: Report
The participation and contribution of knowledge and practices of indigenous local communities is crucial to effectively implement long-term adaptation plans and programmesThe report said the country’s aim to become climate-resilient society by building resilience in major sectors such as infrastructure development, natural resource management and building the capacity of institutions, would not be possible “unless the full participation of indigenous local communities to adaptation and resilience-building.”
Under the Mainstream Climate Change Risk Management in Development Program (MCCRMDP), a part of the Pilot Program on Climate Change Resilience (PPCR) being implemented by the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Environment (MoSTE), the government is integrating climate change risk management into a physical implementation of development projects, with a focus on infrastructure and urban and rural service, especially water supplies and sanitation, roads and irrigation.
During the research study conducted by the Institute for Social and Environmental Transition-Nepal (ISET-N) and Integrated Development Society (IDS), a number of indigenous, traditional and local knowledge and practices were analysed for their applications for climate change adaptation and resilience-building activities in areas like local water management, community-based forest and pasture management, rural transport infrastructure and settlements and
housing. The case studies were based on five different sectors—water, forestry, rural transport, settlements and housing and social institutions—and from 18 districts of Nepal.
