Ritual sacrifices shouldn’t be stopped: Minister Basnet
At a time when the killings of animals at Gadhimai is being criticised, Industry Minister Mahesh Basnet has defended the tradition of ritual animal sacrifice.Laxmi Sah
Inaugurating a health camp organised by a youth association in Gadhimai festival on Wednesday, Basnet said the animal flesh should be packed as offerings and sold in foreign countries. “As no one stops hundreds of thousands of people from sacrificing animals during Bijaya Dashami festival, the voluntary killings of animals for religious purposes in Gadhimai festival cannot be stopped,” said Minister Basnet. He alleged that various organisations of Nepal and India have been trying to stop the sacrifice with the intention to obstruct the festival.
“It is rather important to spread the awareness against animal sacrifice instead of lodging cases at court of Nepal and India,” he added. “Nothing should be done so as to affect the festival.”
Basnet urged the tourism minister, who was accompanying him, to develop the region where the festival is conducted. He announced to donate his monthly salary of Rs. 52,000 for the free health camp to be run during the festival.
