UML feud ends as Oli concedes mistake
The internal dispute seen in the CPN-UML has come to end after the UML Chairman KP Oli conceded his mistake.Ekantipur Report
During a meeting of party office bearers held on Thursday, Chairman Oli admitted his procedural mistakes in the implementation of some decisions. Following which the Madhav Kumar Nepal led faction agreed to end the feud.
“Chairman Oli admitted making procedural mistakes and not holding formal discussions while implementing some decisions,” Secretary Yogesh Bhattarai told eKantipur. “The feud ended with the understanding to institutionalise the party decisions in the coming days.”
Oli’s rival candidate for the post of chairman in the 9th General Assembly, leader Madhav Kumar Nepal, had last month submitted a 7-point memorandum to the party complaining Oli’s unilateral and arbitrary approach in certain major decisions of the party. Changing of two ministers, selection of four parliamentary party chairmen, appointment in the Commission for Landless Squatters and nomination of chief whip were the decisions taken exception by leader Nepal.
Oli claimed that he had implemented the recommendation of Nepal’s supporter Rajendra Prasad Pandey while selecting the parliamentary party chairmen.
However, the dispute over criteria for selection of politburo member is still unresolved. The office bearers’ meeting today has formed a study committee comprising UML Deputy-Chairman Bhim Rawal and General Secretary Ishwar Pokharel. The panel has been charged with the responsibility to come up with a solution regarding this matter.
The Central Committee (CC) meeting summoned for Friday will approve the report of the study committee if the leaders arrive at consensus. If the leaders could not agree on the report, the CC meeting will resolve the matter on its own, a central committee member Jagdish Kusiyat said.
The Nepal faction has been saying the candidates who have spent at least two full terms as central committee members are eligible for politburo seats while the Oli faction has been contending that the alternative CC members should also be deemed eligible for the politburo membership. Oli faction’s modified party statute according to its concept and published it which was objected by Nepal faction.
Prior to this, the UML has agreed to try and forge consensus on the modality of appointing Standing Committee and Politburo as far as possible before going for voting in case of no agreement. But Chairman Oli on Wednesday itself has directed the party’s central election commission to make preparations for elections.
