‘Mithila painting’ exhibition in Kathmandu
The exhibition of Mithila paintings depicting the life and culture of Mithila region has kicked off in Kathmandu from Friday.Ekantipur Report
The event that is being held at Hotel Hyatt was inaugurated by Ragini Upadhaya, the Chancellor at the Nepal Lalitkala Pragya Pratishtan, today. Upadhaya expressed that the Foundation is ready to promote the Mithila art, which is renowned especially for the women’s involvement in its preparation.
Similarly, Subodh Chandra Das, the head at Folk Art Department of the foundation also said that the Mithila painting has gained popularity because it depicts the affairs of daily life through art. “The sacraments of life from birth to death are included in Mithila art,” he said, adding,” Even the women, who cannot read a word, are indulged in the preparation of Mithila art.” He also said such paintings have notified the Mithila area in world culture.
According to the programme coordinator Santosh Mishra, the event organised in association of Crisis Recovery International, an international organisation, is intended on raising the income of those women who make such paintings.
Mithila painting, that was previously limited in the yards and walls of houses in Mithila region as a domestic ritual activity, has now been a source of income for Mithila women, Mishra said.
The exhibition that commenced today will last for two weeks.
