Satyarthi stresses child rights
Nobel peace laureate and Indian child rights champion Kailash Satyarthi, who has also worked against child exploitation in Nepal, addressed programmes here on Friday“Nepal is undergoing a historic time and has the chance to produce an exemplary constitution that preserves child rights as fundamental,” he said, requesting lawmakers to write a constitution that guarantees children’s rights.
He also met Prime Minister Sushil Koirala in Baluwatar and Constituent Assembly Chairman Subas Nembang at the CA building. He expressed his hope that the constitution would be delivered on time and that it would ensure the rights of children.
Satyarthi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize along with 17-year-old Malala Yousafzai of Pakistan for their struggle against child slavery, exploitative child labour and for the right of all children to education.
He heads the Bachpan Bachao Andolan which works to end child exploitation and has actively campaigned against child labour in carpet factories in Kathmandu working with Rugmark Foundation, Nepal.
“This Nobel Peace Prize is not just mine; it is for the children all over the world,” he told a crowd at Apex School in the Capital, where he also urged adults to learn from children. “If you look at the world through a child’s eye you will see a far more beautiful view,” he said.
Satyarthi’s campaign in Nepal helped rescue and rehabilitate more than 12,000 Nepali children working in Indian circuses, embroidery factories and households.
The organisation has rescued and rehabilitated about 84,000 children since its establishment.
A round-table discussion was held at the National Planning Commission where Satyarthi talked about formulating policies that reach the grassroots. He asked the NPC members to remember the smiley faces of children while formulating budget and carrying out projects.
“When planning anything one must close their eyes and think: will this policy or plan bring a smile on the face of the person at the grassroots,” he said.
Among other engagements in Nepal, Satyarthi is set to join the Clean Bagmati Campaign in Kathmandu and visit Dang.
