Schools as zone of peace in Afghanistan
Afghanistan is also implementing the 'School as Zone of Peace campaign' in the model of its Saarc member country Nepal.A team of educators and child rights activists had recently come to Nepal to study about Nepal schools as zone of peace campaign and the ongoing literacy campaign in the country.
Inspired by the success of Nepal, the campaign is currently being implemented in 26 schools of two provinces of Afghanistan, according to senior programme officer of Save the Children, Afghanistan Jamila M. Aziz.
Jamila said the campaign was being implemented in coordination with the Government of Afghanistan, as it was done in Nepal even during the times of conflict.
The campaign is presently being implemented as a pilot project in Faryab and Nangarhar Provinces of Afghanistan.
The recent study in Nepal is expected to provide further boost to the campaign in Afghanistan, said Jamila.
The four-member Afghani team had visited Doti and Dadeldhura in the far west while also holding meetings and interaction with officials of the Department of Education, campaigners and education journalists, according to Save the Children Nepal School as Zone of Peace Programme Coordinator Goma Chettri.
Sri Lanka was the first country in South Asia to enforce the School as Zone of Peace Campaign in 1998 while the campaign began in Nepal in 2003.
