NHRC asks govt to plan funeral
The National Human Rights Commission has urged the government to make necessary arrangements to perform the last rites of Nanda Prasad AdhikariAdhikari died on September 22, while on hunger strike that he staged along with his wife Ganga Maya, demanding that the murderers of his son Krishna Prasad be brought to justice.
Krishna was murdered after abduction by the then rebel Maoists from his home in Fujel of Gorkha district in 2004. His body was later found in Chitwan. In a statement on Monday, the national rights watchdog asked the government to comply with the five-point agreement it signed with Ganga Maya.
Ganga Maya had ended her hunger strike after 11 months upon the request of the government. She was promised compensation for the loss of property the couple incurred since the Maoist insurgency. Besides, the government had announced a special relief package including security for family members and free accommodation and health care for Ganga Maya throughout her life.
She has been undergoing treatment at Bir Hospital.
“The government is committed to deliver on its promises,” said Damodar Bhandari, spokesman for the Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction. He said the process to fulfil the promises made to Ganga Maya was under way.
On Saturday, police arrested Ram Prasad Adhikari, one of the accused of the murder, as promised. He has been released on bail. Interpol has already issued a Red Corner Notice to book Rudra Acharya, the main culprit of the murder believed to be staying in Ireland.
Bhandari said they had not been able to contact Adhikaris’ son Noor Prasad to discuss the matter. He has been out of contact since his father’s death.
