Keeping Nepal in priority, China Foreign Minister Wang arrives
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will stress on China’s neighbourhood policy and convey that Nepal features prominently in China’s “peripheral diplomacy”.Wang arrived on Thursday afternoon leading a seven-member delegation in Kathmandu. After having lunch at Hotel Dwarika’s upon his arrival, he left for Nagarkot for sightseeing where he stays a night at Club Himalaya.
The visiting Chinese foreign minister is scheduled to hold talks with his counterpart Mahendra Bahadur Pandey on Friday morning. The two sides will review the bilateral relations, seeking more Chinese investment in Nepal’s infrastructure and energy sectors and will discuss preparations to celebrate the 60th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries next year, according to the Foreign Ministry.
“Officially we have not opened and exchanged the agendas but signals from Beijing are mainly focused on high-level exchanges in coming year and stressing the China’s neighbourhood diplomacy and China’s commitment to Nepal’s development endeavour,” said a senior foreign ministry official.
Wang will handover medical equipment worth Rs 200 million to Civil Hospital and will lay foundation stone of China-funded Armed Police Force Academy at Balambu that will cost over Rs 3 billion.
There is also the possibility of signing a memorandum of understanding on China’s new annual aid commitment to Nepal worth 800 million yuans, more than five
times the current 150 million yuans.
During a recent meeting in Beijing, senior Chinese officials had informed Nepali Ambassador to China Mahesh Maskey about President Xi’s possible visit to Nepal next year.
“The visit aims to strengthening the bilateral relations with Nepal as Chinese leaders want to convey that Nepal is in their top diplomatic priority,” said Narayan Kaji Shrestha, former Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister. The Chinese side is also consistently telling us to end the protracted transition soon, he added.
Wang, the first senior-level Chinese official to visit Nepal after the election of the Constituent Assembly last year, is likely to convey to the Nepali leaders, officials, intellectuals and policy makers about the foreign policy of the new Chinese leadership, particularly President Xi’s vision about China’s neighbourhood policy on Friday afternoon.
Besides the meetings with President Ram Baran Yadav and Prime Minister Sushil Koirala, he will be meeting political leaders during a luncheon to be hosted by Foreign Minister Pandey and reception by Chinese Ambassador Wu Chuntai separately on the day.
