Sarah Kay performs at Alliance Française
Saturday was the day of poetry at Alliance Française Katmandu (AFK) as Sarah Kay and the Word Warriors took to the stage for spoken-word poetry performances at the AFK premises.Kay is a spoken-word poet and an educator based in the US. Word Warriors are a group of Nepali spoken-word poets who perform in both Nepali and English languages.
The programme that started at 2 pm was titled—after Kay’s newly released book—“No Matter the Wreckage”. This is the second time that the poet performed in Nepal, the last time being in 2012 at Jatra, Thamel. The programme was organised by Quixote’s Cove.
Nain Sindhulia Pokharel was the first to perform during the afternoon and his poem was an ode to the poet Bhupi Sherchan. The poem addressed Sherchan and talked about the contemporary condition of the Capital.
The other Nepali poets who performed during the programme were Yukta Bajracharya, Ujjwala Maharjan, Samip Dhungel and Gaurab Subba.
Kay was the last one to come to the stage. Between short stories and personal experiences, she performed about 10 poems. The list also included “Daughter”, one of her most popular pieces. She dedicated the poem to her mother. Kay also performed the title poem of her new book and dedicated it to her kid brother. She ended the performance with a poem about her primary school teacher.
