Authorities halt food distribution to flood victims
The local administration has halted relief distribution to the flood-displaced people here in Bardiya district following complaints that substandard food items were being suppliedActing on the complaint, the District Natural Disaster Rescue Committee-led by the Chief District Officer issued directives to the World Food Programme (WFP) not to distribute food items to the flood victims.
The flood displaced living in the temporary camps for flood victims in Rampur Tappu had complained that the rice, lentil and oil distributed by the WFP were substandard and caused various health complications.
The local administration said that it stopped the distribution of food provisions meant as relief for flood displaced as per the complaints lodged by the victims regarding the quality of the food items being distributed.
Chief District Officer Narahari Baral said that the sample of the food stuffs distributed by WFP to flood victims has been sent to Kathmandu for test.
“Action will be taken if the food stuffs are indeed found to be substandard,” said Baral.
The flood victims claimed that the rice and lentil were not well-cooked while edible oil caused stomach problems. Regional representative of the WFP Moti Thapa said he had no knowledge whatsoever of the matter.
