UML plans regional mass meetings
As the Jan 22 deadline for the promulgation of new constitution is approaching, the ruling CPN-UML is preparing for regional mass meetings for what it said to keep party cadres’ updated.Accusing the opposition UCPN (Maoist) and Madhes-centric parties of obstructing the voting process to resolve disputed the issues of the new statute, the party is holding mass meetings in major cities on the same day. “We want to share developments made so far for the constitution and obstacles being faced at the political level,” party’s Secretary Prithivi Subba Gurung said.
Such meetings are scheduled for Friday, according to leaders. Top leaders from the party are scheduled to address the regional rallies and local leaders are already asked to make necessary arrangements. “Many people accuse us of not taking position on constitution while others say we blocked the process, so we are going to the share party’s positions and difficulties we are facing,” said party’s Deputy General Secretary Ghanashyam Bhusal.
As per the party’s decision, Chairman KP Sharma Oli is attending the regional gathering scheduled in Janakpur, senior leader Jhala Nath Khanal in Biratnagar, Madhav Nepal in Birgunj. Similarly, Vice-chairpersons Bam Dev Gautam, Asta Laxmi Shakya and Yubaraj Gyawali and Geneal Secretary Ishwor Pokharel are scheduled to address rallies in Nepalgunj, Kanchanpur Dhangadhi and Lahan, respectively.
