3 cops convicted for torturing man in custody
The Banke district court on Monday convicted three policemen of torturing a man in custody and directed authorities to take action against them.Thakur Singh Tharu
The court has also directed the government to provide Rs 100,000 as compensation to the victim. The district court said it will send a letter to the concerned authorities to take departmental action against the three policemen.
Assistant Sub Inspector Buddhi Prasad Sharma, head constable Dhan Bahadur Chand, and constable Man Bahadur Thapa, who were stationed in the Area Police office, Gabar, were found guilty of torturing 37-year-old Bista of Tikulipur-7 in Kanchanpur district in custody. Police had arrested Bista some seven months ago for picking up a fight with a cop.
Bista suffered injuries on various parts of his body due to police beating in custody. Likewise, the torture also caused blood clotting in his left eye and chest.
Some of his teeths were also found to be broken.
“I am now assured that there is a higher authority that can take action against policemen who brutally thrashed me,” said Bista following the court’s verdict.
