Democracy Day was marked in the Capital on Thursday with the President, Prime Minister, constitutional body heads, chiefs of security agencies and  other top government officials joining a state function.

Prime Minister Sushil Koirala, who had reached Shahid Gate to pay tribute to martyrs, was shown black flags by kin and family members of several martyrs.

Demonstrators who had assembled there chanted slogans against the government demanding proper compensation and employment opportunities for the martyrs’ family members. Police detained JB Dhaulakoti of the Martyrs and Injured Concerned Citizens Coordination Committee along with its member Tham Bahadur Tamata in course of the demonstration. A large number of security personnel were deployed in and around the Shahid Gate area for security of the PM and dignitaries such as Deputy Prime Ministers Bam Dev Gautam and Prakash Man Singh.
