What to Do! Reloaded at Shilpee Theatre
What to Do! Reloaded, a play directed by Dagmar Elgart and Ghimire Yubaraj is currently being staged at Gothale Theatre, Battisputali, Kathmandu.Timothy Aryal
The play is a comedy, and a satire on the current political condition of Nepal. It is a story within a story, where a group of eight theatre artists are working to create a play of their own.
In the play within the play, the artists can be seen trying to put together a play about two tourists who have travelled from Switzerland to Nepal and are staying at a hotel owned by a grumpy woman who likes to boss her maid around. One day, the tourists order strawberries, which are not available in the area. And when the tourists tell the woman that they are willing to pay any sum of money for the strawberries, she sends the maid off on a long journey to faraway mountains to get them what they want.
But then, instead of working together, the artists start fighting over who is going to perform what role, which ultimately hampers the production of the play.
The entire act is based on the concept mime and pantomime, meaning no stage properties are used for the play, and the artists solely rely on their bodies to create the space and situations for the scenes. For example, in the beginning of the play, the artists use their bodies collectively to depict the geographical location of Nepal. And during the maid’s journey within the play, the rivers and the mountains are collectively depicted by the artists by using their body movements.
All the actors wear the same black dress for the performance, which eliminates visual differences in terms of colours and textures and helps the audience pay more attention to the movements and body postures.
The play features Silvana Castelberg, Badal Bhatta, Sonam Lama, Jeevan Baral, Sarita Sah, Pabitra Khadka, as well as directors Elgart and Ghimire. The live musical score is performed by Sampurna Lama (flute), Barta Gandharba (sarangi) and Binod Gaaunle (madal).
The staging commenced from April 11 and will be on till April 18.
