Oppn alliance meet inconclusive
A meeting of the 30 party opposition alliance held to discuss the alliance’s working course after the withdrawal of the planned street protests, has concluded at Singha Durbar on Friday.Ekantipur Report
During the meeting that was held at the Parliamentary Party office of the UCPN (M), Sadbhawana party Chairman Rajendra Mahato among other Madhes-based party leaders demanded the UCPN (M) clarify its commitment regarding the 9-point agreement of the alliance.
UCPN (M)’s relations with its opposition partners, especially Madhes-based parties, have strained after it withdrew the planned street protests.
Meanwhile, the UCPN (M) is positive towards forming a dialogue committee and not holding talks, separately, with the ruling parties—Nepali Congress and CPN-UML—without discussing with the alliance first. However, a formal decision is yet to take place.
Speaking with eKantipur after the meeting, UCPN (M) senior leader Baburam Bhattarai said that the parties within the alliance were committed to stand united and mend the weaknesses after the withdrawal of general strike called on April 24- 27. “As the alliance is an issue-based coalition, we have decided not to break up the alliance until the 9-point agreement is not implemented,” said Bhattarai, “We have urged them to put behind the suspicions as there are common issues raised by UCPN (M), Janajatis and Mashesis.
Spokesperson for the alliance Prem Bahadur Singh informed that another meeting has been called on April 27 as many leaders didn’t get the time to express their views. “In the mean time, a taskforce under the coordination of UCPN (M) General Secretary Krishna Bahadur Mahara will work towards the formation of a talks team among other issues,” said Singh.
