Govt prepares to return foreign rescue teams
The government is preparing to send back the foreign rescue teams that are in Nepal for the search and rescue operation following the deadly earthquake of April 25.Ekantipur Report
A meeting of the Central Natural Disaster Relief Committee (NDRC) on Sunday praised the contributions made by the international search and rescue workers of 34 different countries deployed in Nepal during the crisis. The committee decided to thank the foreign rescue teams for their support and request them to go back. However, the decision is yet to be approved by the Cabinet.
According to Spokesperson at Home Ministry Laxmi Prasad Dhakal, the foreign rescue team arrived with the Cabinet request for the operation, hence, the Cabinet approval is required to send them back.
“The NDRC has already taken the decision. Once the Cabinet decides, they will be requested to return,” said Dhakal, “The remaining tasks of search and rescue will be carried out by Nepali manpower.”
Various teams from 34 countries comprising 4,050 rescue personnel have arrived in the country since the deadly earthquake, the Home Ministry said. The team comprises of 129 dogs as well.
According to international provision, the foreign rescue teams must return within seven days of their arrival in any country. It has been nine days since the deadly quake hit Nepal and foreign teams started arriving here.
