“We aim to construct 1,000 transitional shelters before the monsoon season starts,” he told a programme in Kathmandu. “We envision that there will be another 9,000 shelters built within the next six months.”

The Chaudhary Foundation will erect 1,000 transitional shelters on its own at an estimated cost of Rs70million. It has earmarked Rs100 million for the remaining 9,000 shelters proposed to be built.

The group said that it planned to restore 100 damaged primary schools in severely affected districts with an additional funding of Rs50 million. According to CG, it has set aside Rs30 million for immediate relief efforts out of which Rs20 million has already been spent.

The group said it also planned to involve other individuals and institutions interested in joining the home building project.

The houses proposed to be built by the Chaudhary Foundation are estimated to cost $700 each.

The beneficiaries will have to participate in the construction process, according to the foundation. The cost of the homes will range from $500 to $1,000 based on the availability of local resources, materials and participation of the beneficiaries.  

“We made a contribution immediately after the quake,” Chaudhary said. “Now, we have come up with plans for the rehabilitation of educational institutions and construction of shelters for needy people after much contemplation.”

According to the Chaudhary Foundation, the PWC India Foundation will be in charge of project monitoring and process evaluation.

The Sustainable Environment and Ecological Development Society (SEEDS), India will be designing the project and playing a role as implementation partner in the shelter programme.
