Stern action if house owners hike rent: Govt
The government has warned stern action against those house owners inside Kathmandu Valley who increase the house rent to take undue advantage in the aftermath of the April 25 earthquake. The Home Ministry issued a statement on Friday following complaints that some landlords were increasing house rent after in the quake.
“It is not fair on social, ethical and legal grounds to charge high rent from those affected from the earthquake instead of helping them,” the ministry said in its statement.
The ministry has also requested people to inform the authorities if the house owners try to charge high rent. Complaints could be recorded by calling Nepal Police at 100 and 1234 or the Armed Police Force at 1114.
Of around 50 million people residing in the Valley, half of them live in rent, according to National Population Survey 2011 of the Central Bureau of Statistics. It shows that the valley’s major economic activities are based on these people.
More than 200,000 houses have either been damaged or destroyed by the earthquake, rendering many people homeless. These involve a large number of city dwellers along with the ones who possess houses in rural areas. Families whose houses have been unfit to live in due to cracks or other structural damage have also been compelled to move out.
