Oxfam to help remote areas
One month after the Great Earthquake, British aid organisation Oxfam is involved in a race against time to deliver life-saving aid to the most remote communities in the country before the moMountain guides and porters are assisting the organisation with its relief delivery in Gorkha where up to 90 percent of homes have been destroyed and communities have been cut off from the outside world by landslides.
On May 17, the first group of porters and mountain guides trekked from Barpak, the epicentre of the Great Quake, for over four hours to reach Laprak with the equivalent of almost 2.5 tonnes of aid materials, which was distributed to the victims there.
Oxfam is now planning to reach other isolated communities in the country as soon as possible.
Orla Murphy, head of Oxfam Nepal earthquake response, said, “We have called upon Nepal’s famous mountain guides to make sure the aid gets through to those who need it the most. We must do everything we can to provide people with the assistance they need before the monsoon hits.”
Oxfam aims to reach out to at least 400,000 people by the time the monsoon sets in. Over the next three years, the organisation plans to deliver US $ 56 million through relief programmes in Nepal.
