The joint team has so far demolished 4,200 buildings in 14 of the worst quake-hit districts, including Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Lalitpur.

According to the NA, the highest number of houses  (821) were demolished in Kavre district , followed by Nuwakot (560), Sindhupalchok (461), and Dhading (414). The team pulled down 858 buildings inside Kathmandu Valley, 407 of them were in Bhaktapur.

The preliminary assessment carried out by the local administrations from the three districts inside Valley shows that altogether 4,054 earthquake-damaged buildings need to be demolished, including 1,451 in Kathmandu and 1,998 in Lalitpur.

NA has said that the joint team cannot demolish 1,752 buildings inside the Valley–– 822 in Kathmandu, 630 in Bhaktapur and 300 in Lalitpur––due to lack of equipment. The demolition is carried out after the metropolitan city and municipalities report to the security forces through district administration office after assessing the status of the buildings.

The government has formed an apex committee comprising the members from the Home Ministry, Federal Affairs and Local Development Ministry, Physical Infrastructure and Transportation Ministry, the NA, the Nepal Police, the Armed Police Force and local bodies, to oversee the demolition project.

Records at Ministry of Home Affairs show that a total of 4,784 public and 531,266 private buildings were either destroyed or damaged by the Gorkha earthquake and its aftershocks.
