The landing strip has reportedly suffered cracks due to the arrival of a large number of heavy aircraft, especially those bringing in relief supplies following the April 25 Great quake.
As a result of the airport being shut down, some incoming aircrafts were diverted to nearby Indian cities. A Turkish Air plane was diverted to New Delhi while an aircraft of Oman Air landed in Lucknow, according to Bharat Kumar Shrestha, airport manager of Oman Air.
