The Park View Horizon at Dhapasi and Oriental Apartment Phase II at Kuleshwor are unsafe for immediate use have been given red stickers, the Department of Urban Development and Building Construction (DUDBC) said.

Likewise, 31 apartment buildings have got yellow stickers which means they can be used after appropriate repairs. Seven high-rises have been awarded green stickers which means they are safe to live in.

The April 25 Great Earthquake and continuous aftershocks have severely impacted high-rise buildings across the Kathmandu valley.

“We have categorized the buildings based on the rapid assessment. There is a need to conduct in-depth studies of buildings receiving red and yellow stickers,” said Sagar Krishna Joshi, divisional engineer at the DUDBC, adding people living around buildings receiving red stickers had been demanding that they be pulled down right away, but that it did not necessarily mean that they should be razed. “A red sticker means that a building is unsafe for immediate use only.”

While most engineers and property developers maintain that there has been no significant structural harm to high-rise buildings from the earthquake and that the damage is mostly “cosmetic damage”, geologists say that the buildings sustained cracks in their walls due to lack of an in-depth study of the soil where they have been erected.
