Parties closer to pact on eight-state model
The major four political parties have agreed in principle to federate the country into eight provincial states in the new constitution.Ekantipur Report
A meeting of the top leaders of the major parties—Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, UCPN (Maoist) and the Madhesi front— held at Baluwatar on Monday made this agreement. However, the names and the demarcation of border of the states are yet to be finalised. A leader present in the meeting said that a commission of experts is likely to be formed to finalise the names and boundary.
The top leaders are scheduled to hold a meeting later this evening at 5 pm in an attempt to finalise the name and border of the federal states. Ifthe parties could not reach an agreement in the meeting, leaders will decide on the formation of the commission.
NC President and Prime Minister Sushil Koirala, CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli, UCPN (M) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Madhesi front coordinator and Madhesi Janadhikar Forum- Loktantrik Chairman Bijaya Kumar Gachhadhar among other leaders were present at today’s meeting.
