Human rights activists, lawyers and campaigners have urged the government to ratify the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees stating that the country hosts over 40,000 refugees from various countries.
Speaking at a workshop held ahead of the World Refugee Day being marked on June 20, Asia Pacific Refugee Rights Network Chairman Gopal Krishna Siwakoti said Nepal should endorse the convention and respect other humanitarian conventions and treaties that it is a party to. “The state cannot run away from its duty,” he said, urging the government to respect the rights of the refugees on humanitarian grounds and ratify the 1951 convention.
Another human right activist Prof Kapil Shrestha said the state lacks policy while dealing with the refugee issue. Speaking on the occasion, three representatives the refugee communities in the country also urged the Nepal government to treat them on humanitarian ground. The workshop was organised by the Forum for Protection of People’s Rights Nepal.
